Los Gigantes

This is how Game 5 looked at our house tonight...

We only have 1 tv in the house, and it's in the parent's bedroom.  Thanks to WNYW, we were able to see the Giants vs. Philly's game.  So we ate in front of the tv tonight, using the bed as the couch.

Dempsey's remarked that it's not very often that he and Grandfather
are watching the same thing on tv at the same time.  True.

GO GIANTS!

Isla del Tigre - Amapala

Not a lot of time to write... report cards, school meetings, life ... blah blah blah.
Here are some photos to our recent trip to Amapala.

The pier.

3 out of 4 of us got stung by jellyfish.  Linnea's arm seemed to show the signs of the stinging the worst.  And this was a couple of hours past the "jellyfish bite" incident, as she calls it.   We had to swim through a ... school of jellyfish? a swarm of jellyfish? a gaggle?  a pod?  No, that's not right.  Anyway, we had not choice but to swim through them get back to shore.  Carlito got stung, too.  Eric had to take two trips because he was ferrying kids on his back.  More pictures of Carlito to come...

The reason why we were swimming though a SMACK (thank you Google) of jellyfish was because we swam out to a cave with hundreds (thousands?) of bats... look closely and they're hanging from the rocks of the cave.

Creative use of grain sack on a structure on the beach.

Playing Crazy 8's with our new friend, Carlito.

A Good Read

When was the last time you read a book and you were so sad that the book was coming to its end?  When was the last time you read something that made you angry?  Made you question your beliefs?  Made you change your mind?  Made you cry?

A couple of nights ago, Dempsey was close to finishing Charlotte's Web.  He is so unfamiliar with the name Charlotte or unexposed to the commercialization due to the movie that every time he would talk about the book, he would pronounce "Charlotte" with a ch rather than an sh.  As a parent, I think these unadulterated pronunciations are cute.  Just like how he called Sponge Bob Square Pants the "Cheese Monster" for the longest time because he had never seen the show.

When I checked out Charlotte's Web a couple of weeks ago from from the library, I figured the kids would like it as a read aloud.  After the first two chapters, Dempsey hijacked the book for his own night time reading, and he finished the book in about a week.  Realize that this is the kid who, until exactly a year ago, could not read, let alone write his own name using lower case letters.  He was not a dummy.  But rather a student who had spend the previous year in a kindergarten that focused on the arts and story telling instead of short and long vowel sounds.  When we made the move to a mainstream, international school, he needed to do some catch up.  Thanks to the patience of a seasoned reading tutor and (ahem.....)  parents who worked with him every day, he made up the time and was soon reading with the best of 'em.  Or at least, his first grade compatriots.

Fast forward to now.  He is a reading machine.  He has read about 2 dozen of the Magic Tree House books since August.  These books are great for getting kids to read, but not necessarily great examples of literature that moves you.  No disrespect for what Mary Pope Osborne has done.  She has struck the match that has lit the fire for hundred of thousands of kids who now love to read.

So when I brought home Charlotte's Web, neither kid was interested.  They only wanted to know where Jack and Annie's next adventure would take them...  But after a few days, they asked to hear the story.

After Dempsey had made his way through most of the book, he got to the second to the last chapter... stop reading here if you haven't read the book and don't want me to spoil the ending...

... where Charlotte dies, he stops reading and says that he is so sad he wants to cry and doesn't want to finish the book.  He sat there, on the couch... quivering chin, eyes with a faraway look, slumped shoulders.  He was visible shaken by Charlotte's death and I was dancing triumphantly (on the inside).  My kid just read a story that evoked emotion in him that made him feel like a friend had just died!  He connected to a story on paper that moved him to tears.  How cool!

Silly Antics in West End, Roatan - Part 3

I think this will probably be the last installment... we had a lot of pictures of our trip to Roatan this time between our camera and Jessie's.  Many photo credits go to her and most don't need captions...

enjoy!

Super nice fishing gear on a super nice fishing boat...

Jessie followed this turtle for a while...

Silly Antics in West End, Roatan - Part 2

We didn't realize that there would be a fishing festival in West End last weekend.  There was food, drinks, light up toys, music, sack races and more!  We enjoyed the food off the street every night.

Island version of pin the tail on the donkey - I think.  He uses the stick to feel around for the metal bowl... when he finds it, he is rewarded by the sound of the bowl and the cheers from the crowd.

Tastiest gringas in town made here...

And his delicious SPICY salsa.

The Jager trailer.

Party in the street.

The sack race!  The kid in the white shirt  has a great look on his face, the kid in the blue shirt
is showing his sack racing prowess by jumping about 2 feet off the ground, but the boy in the
 yellow shirt won the race.

The evening ended with a nice kiss...
and...

a tarantula.

Silly Antics in West End, Roatan - Part 1

Jennie and Jessie enjoying a float.

Too much vigorous play means the yellow floaty went over the edge of the pool.

Recovery mission to retrieve yellow floaty.

Big reach.

Looks like the floaty has lost some air.

No worries... still provides entertainment.

Honduran Independence Day

We are preparing for our 5 day Independence Day holiday and days off for Day of the Teacher...

Today Linnea marched in the pre-school parade.  She marched so proudly.

Jessie arrived yesterday.  She got artsy today and took a panoramic photo...

We are heading out into the city tonight to show her the town.  We have every intention of
leaving tomorrow morning at 5a.m.  First destination... Sambo Creek.  Then off to Roatan
for the remainder of the weekend.

Extension Cord

We needed an extension cord, and this is what we were able to borrow.  It worked fine and did the job.
But, does any part of this look sketchy to you?

(to be fair, there are real extension cords available here)
